Personal Update

Hello again and welcome to another Own Your Life Club Newsletter!

Victorian-BushfiresAlong with the rest of Australia and so many people around the world, we take this opportunity to express our sadness and disbelief at the consequences of the ferocious bushfires in Victoria and the tragic loss of life, livelihoods and property.

If there can possibly be a positive from the devastation it would have to be the heroic tales we've been hearing about and the uniting of all Australians in supporting those so badly affected.

Queensland-FloodsAnd while Victoria was burning, Queensland has been under flood.  There are tales of such generosity of spirit, with flooded Queenslanders more concerned about their fellow countrymen and women in Victoria and opening their hearts and their wallets for them.

We have friends who live in the very pretty but fire-prone areas here in the Adelaide Hills who are now taking a good hard look at their own situation and how prepared (or otherwise) they are to cope if the same thing happened here.  It could so easily have been any of us outside Victoria as well and the danger is not over yet with the warm weather continuing.

We wish those affected well in their time of grieving and rebuilding.

Success Tip

Ian KiernanToday's success tip comes from Ian Kiernan, Chairman of Clean Up Australia Ltd.  It is particularly fitting at this time with the brave and selfless work of the volunteers helping in the bushfires.

Clean Up Australia Ltd is a national non-profit organisation that coordinates Clean Up Australia Day and Clean Up the World. Clean Up Australia Ltd also runs Clean Up Australia Projects, which are long-term community-based environment programs.

From your experience what are some of the differences between leading paid staff and leading unpaid volunteers?

Regardless of whether team members are paid or unpaid, I treat everyone who works with me with respect. At Clean Up Australia we have both volunteers and paid personnel, and I truly believe that combination is required for success.

All of the paid staff at Clean Up Australia are there because they believe in our cause and share my passion. I also encourage them to volunteer in their own communities, allowing them a day a year to do so at our expense.

Along the way we make sure we have fun and share our successes because the rewards of working for a not-for-profit are less tangible than money.

Volunteers are special people because they work with us without expecting to receive any reward or recognition. I therefore consider it important to recognise their work and commitment, especially when there are a number of other ways they could be spending their leisure time.

The main difference between the these two types of team members is that volunteers, by the very nature of their involvement, will generally be able to give you less time than your paid team. This needs to be taken into account whenever tasks and responsibilities are shared.

Clean Up Australia Day is 1 March 2009 - so let's all get out there and do our bit!
