Personal Update

Hello again and welcome to another Own Your Life Club Newsletter!

HeatwaveWhat a week it's been here in Adelaide, having just survived 6 days of temperatures in the 40s - with the max being 45.7 degrees Celsius (that's 114.3 degrees Fahrenheit)!!  There have been similar stories in many Australian cities.  It's hard to stay cool in those conditions and sadly there were many heat-related deaths, mainly among the elderly.

Today is a mild 38 degrees and we'll be putting on our woollies by Sunday when it's tipped to reach a mere 25!

Interest Rates Heading DownAnother set of numbers that are heading in a downward direction are interest rates.  The Reserve Bank of Australia has just announced an interest rate cut of 1% taking the official rate to 3.25%, the lowest since February 1964, exactly 45 years ago.

I remember when rates were around 17% in the 80s - it was only fun if you had money in the bank earning interest.

There will come a time when interest rates will be unlikely to go any lower and when the share market will pick up again.

If you've been thinking about positioning yourself for the growth phase when it comes, now would be a great time to educate yourself about the best way to prepare for the future.

Success Tip

This fortnight's Success Tip comes from body language experts Allan and Barbara Pease.

Allan-and-Barbara-PeaseAllan Pease began his career selling rubber sponges as a schoolboy. He was a gifted salesman, but soon discovered that his real talent lay in reading people’s body language.

Together with his wife Barbara, he has travelled the world lecturing, writing and making documentaries about body language and how it can be used to enhance your success.

Allan & Barbara Pease are the world’s best-known experts on body language.  Here are just a few Tips from their best selling book 'The Definitive Book Of Body Language':

THE BASICS OF READING BODY LANGUAGE

There are some important rules to remember when reading body language to ensure we get the right message. You can practice your skills anywhere people are interacting.

Try turning off the sound on the TV – can you still understand what’s happening?

Rule 1 – Read Gestures in Clusters

It’s essential for accurate reading to look for clusters of gestures. Just like a sentence, clusters provide the context that gives meaning to the gesture. A body language cluster is made up of at least 3 gestures. A person might be unsure of their words if they scratch their head after speaking – but then again they may just have dandruff!

Rule 2 – Look for Congruence

Research shows that body language carries as much as five times the impact of spoken words. When gestures and words don’t match, most people will rely on the physical message and ignore the content. A lack of congruence between words and body language can be a key that someone is trying to deceive you.

Rule 3 – Think about Context

Don’t forget that environments can affect people’s body language. The man next to you at the bus stop might have his arms crossed tightly. He might be trying to avoid speaking to you – but maybe he’s just cold.

SPACE INVADERS

Every one of us has an invisible bubble around us – our own personal space. Whether we are aware of it or not, this space is divided into different zones. How close we allow others to come depends on our relationship with that person.

The Intimate Zone: 15 – 45 centimetres (6 – 18 inches)

We guard this zone as if it were our own personal territory. Only those who are emotionally closest to us – children, parents, lovers and friends – are allowed to enter.

The Personal Zone: 46 centimetres – 1.22 metres (18 inches – 2 feet)

The comfortable distance we stand from others at social gatherings like cocktail parties, office functions and social occasions.

The Social Zone: 1.22 – 3.6 metres (4 – 12 feet)

This is how far we stand from the postman, the grocer, the plumber, new people at work and others we don’t know well.

The Public Zone:
Over 3.6 metres (12 feet)

The comfortable distance to stand when addressing a large group. These zones vary depending on cultural factors – like which country you grew up in, or whether you lived in the city or country.

We can tolerate strangers entering our social or personal zones, but the minute they cross the line into the intimate zone, we react instantly.

The heart rate increases, adrenalin floods the bloodstream and blood rushes to the brain and muscles in preparation for ‘fight or flight’.

This is why prisoners in overcrowded prisons become violent, and mobs become aggressive. As each person has less space, they start to feel hostile. Interrogators invade the personal space of suspects to break down their resistance to questioning.
