Do you sometimes miss what someone is saying because you are thinking ahead to add your opinion and thoughts? Are you really listening?

Have you ever tuned out when someone was talking to you and not heard what they've said because your mind has drifted off to something totally unrelated? Are you really listening?

If you'd like to learn how to improve communication skills, there are four key skills for improving interpersonal relationships based around listening.

They are:

Sometimes people just want to talk and let things out.  They're not interested in receiving feedback or advice.  So if you want to know how to improve communication skills, you should be passively listening to that person's words with undivided attention and without verbally replying.

If it is done with an open heart, and with empathy for the other person's feelings, it may help that person to explore their own inner wisdom and guidance.

Be encouraging with "I see", or "That's interesting" and other non-judgmental messages. "Tell me more about it" or "Would you like to talk about it?"

As an active listener you should only give feedback to reassure the other person that you understand what they mean by repeating their main points, not giving advice.

Active listening encourages the other person to speak freely.  If you're not sure what they mean you can say, "Let's see if I understand what you've just said".

Being an effective listener should be natural and genuine. Learning new skills for open communication takes practice, time and awareness.
