Lance Armstrong - The Legend

One of the biggest comebacks in sporting history is being celebrated here in Adelaide with Lance Armstrong’s recent arrival. He’s here to take part in the Tour Down Under Pro-Tour which begins in just 3 days. Adelaide is abuzz!

He’s fit and he’s ready to race. His first training ride was in 41C degree heat! This will be the first public test of Armstrong’s fitness and his standing in the peloton as he embarks on a schedule that will include next month’s Amgen Tour of California, the Giro d’Italia in May and, finally, what Armstrong hopes will be a competitive attempt at an eighth Tour de France win in July.

The 37-year-old built his 1999-2005 Tour de France triumphs on an iron will, exceptional physiology, meticulous planning, a solid ego and a bit of a mean streak.

Lance Armstrong is not in Adelaide to make a fool of himself and he wants to do well in this race.

However he has also stressed that the main point of his comeback, as a cancer survivor himself, is to publicise the global fight against cancer.

His new high performance carbon fibre bike arrived in town yesterday and is an awesome machine. There are two sets of numbers painted on this amazing bike. The number 1274 represents the number of days since he was last on his bike as a pro-racer and the number 275 in memory of the 27.5 million people who have died from cancer in that time.

Armstrong might be 37, but he lacks nothing for motivation. His story is a truly remarkable one of courage, determination, focus, self-belief and guts.

Seven time Tour de France cycle champion Lance Armstrong says once he finishes his cycling comeback his sporting career will the turn full circle.

He has confirmed widely-held speculation that he’ll eventually compete in an Ironman triathlon.

Lance Armstrong was a top-class triathlete over shorter courses in the late 1980s when he was a teenager, before switching to cycling. The racing world is very thankful that he did!

Lance Armstrong is an inspiration. We’re excited and proud to have him in our city and wish him great success. Go Lance Armstrong!

RIP Jett Travolta

RIP Jett Travolta

When I logged on to my computer this morning I saw the headline ‘Family Tragedy’ and learnt that John Travolta and Kelly Preston’s 16 year-old-son Jett had died in what appears to be a tragic accident at their holiday home in the Bahamas.

A life cut short and all that unfulfilled potential. I can only imagine the pain of a loss like that which would change you forever.

The Christmas and New Year season is a time for joy and family. For John Travolta and Kelly Preston it will never be the same again.

Those of us with loving families, children, grandchildren and good friends are the luckiest people in the world. Make sure you tell them how much they mean to you.

My 20 year old son Noah has just driven 750 km to a New Years rock festival. He’s reasonably sensible but those phone calls saying he’s arrived safely at his destination, having a great time, and letting us know he’s on the way back home afterwards were very welcome. And when I saw him walk through the door yesterday, safe and sound, I was happy and relieved.

All you want is for your kids to be happy and safe.

Rest in peace Jett Travolta.

These are from a book called ‘Disorder in the America Courts’, and are things people actually said in court, word for word, taken down and now published by court reporters who had the torment of staying calm while these exchanges were actually taking place.

ATTORNEY: What was the first thing your husband said to you that morning?

WITNESS: He said, ‘Where am I, Cathy?’

ATTORNEY: And why did that upset you?

WITNESS: My name is Susan!

________________________________________________

ATTORNEY: Now doctor, isn’t it true that when a person dies in his sleep, he doesn’t know about it until the next morning?

WITNESS: Did you actually pass the bar exam?

________________________________________________

ATTORNEY: The youngest son, the twenty-one-year-old, how old is he?

WITNESS: Uh, he’s twenty-one.

WITNESS: Guess.

________________________________________________

ATTORNEY: Is your appearance here this morning pursuant to a deposition notice which I sent to your attorney?

WITNESS: No, this is how I dress when I go to work.

________________________________________________

ATTORNEY: Doctor, how many of your autopsies have you performed on dead people?

WITNESS: All my autopsies are performed on dead people. Would you like to rephrase that?

________________________________________________

ATTORNEY: ALL your responses MUST be oral, OK? What school did you go to?

WITNESS: Oral.

________________________________________________

ATTORNEY: Do you recall the time that you examined the body?

WITNESS: The autopsy started around 8:30 p.m.

ATTORNEY: And Mr. Denton was dead at the time?

WITNESS: No, he was sitting on the table wondering why I was doing an autopsy on him!

________________________________________________

– And the best for last: —

ATTORNEY: Doctor, before you performed the autopsy, did you check for a pulse?

WITNESS: No.

ATTORNEY: Did you check for blood pressure?

WITNESS: No.

ATTORNEY: Did you check for breathing?

WITNESS: No.

ATTORNEY: So, then it is possible that the patient was alive when you began the autopsy?

WITNESS: No.

ATTORNEY: How can you be so sure, Doctor?

WITNESS: Because his brain was sitting on my desk in a jar.

ATTORNEY: I see, but could the patient have still been alive, nevertheless?

WITNESS: Yes, it is possible that he could have been alive and practicing law
