Happy Mother’s Day!
Sunday, May 10th, 2009

Happy Mother’s Day to all the mums. I hope you’re being spoilt and having a fun day with the family.

I thought I’d give a short history of the tradition of Mother’s Day. It’s known by different names around the world, ie Mother’s Day, Muttertag, La Festa della Mamma, Mothering Sunday, Fête des Mères, Día de las Madres… however the love and heartfelt appreciation is the same the world over.

Most mothering festivals in early history were held in the springtime to celebrate the rebirth of the land and the beginning of the most fertile time of the year. In the land Down Under where European settlement began only a couple of hundred years ago, we celebrate Mother’s Day in autumn - which doesn’t make sense really, when the celebration is about fertility and renewal. But anyway…

The modern version of Mother’s Day with families bringing flowers and gifts (wanted and unwanted but all appreciated) to their mums, can be traced back to 17th Century England. Mothering Sunday was the fourth Sunday in Lent…even the strict rules about fasting and penance were forgotten on this special day. Children who were away from home learning a trade or working as servants were allowed to return home for the day. The family gathered to share food and drink with Mother as the special guest. Mothers were given treats of cakes and wildflowers.

In the US in 1914 President Woodrow Wilson declared that Mother’s Day should be celebrated as a national holiday on the second Sunday in May. Here in Australia, as with many other countries, we celebrate Mother’s Day also on the second Sunday in May. In the UK Mother’s Day, or Mothering Day, is held on the fourth Sunday in Lent, which is difficult for hubby Richard whose mother lives in the UK - he always forgets!

It’s a celebration of mothers…dedicated to honoring the mums who give so much to their families without asking for anything in return. Perhaps every day should be Mother’s Day, but most families are too busy with everyday things to say thank you for every meal, every good night kiss or every piece of ‘advice’.

Once a year, the world stops being busy and says thank you. Flowers, cards and gifts are just the outward signs. What we mothers love most is the fact that our families really do notice all that we do and on this one day we are queen … and this mother’s 20-something year old sons have offered to cook dinner tonight!

Happy Mother’s Day!

Red Wine Is Good For Your Brain …

Red Wine Is Good For Your Brain - I Knew It!

Recent research has shown that drinking red wine helps you think. Who’d have thought?

Men and women both did better in mental arithmetic tests after being given ‘resveratrol’, the wonder ingredient in red wine, or more precisely in the skins of red wine grapes.

The plant chemical, said to have abilities from burning off junk food and warding off heart disease, to being an anti-inflammatory and preventing as well as curing cancer, is believed to increase blood flow to the brain.

These are big claims. In the meantime, I’ll just pour another glass of red wine. I used to drink red wine because it tastes so good. But now I’m drinking it purely for medicinal purposes!

Cheers!

The Beatles Degree …
Thursday, March 5th, 2009

I checked the date on the newspaper today and it’s definitely not April 1 - so it must be true!

A university in Liverpool, the home of the Beatles, is the first academic institution in the world to offer a Masters Degree on the life and legacy of The Beatles. How cool is that!

The new course at Liverpool Hope University is called The Beatles, popular music and society. It begins later in the year and will cover four modules of study. I guess that’s one module for each Beatle!

I was one of their biggest fans and there was a time when I knew everything there was to know about the Fab Four. That would be one University Degree where I could probably get top marks!

Hmmm, I wonder whether they do a correspondence course…?

Baby Boomers Are Returning To Education …
Sunday, February 15th, 2009

Baby Boomers are returning to education in large numbers - either to update previously acquired skills or to learn new ones. The proportion of students aged 45 to 54 years has now overtaken the 24 to 34 year age group.

Some have retired already and others will be looking at retirement options in the next few years and they want to stretch their minds or prolong their careers.

What is motivating them and what are they looking for in retirement?

Some will just want to fill their time by learning something new while others will be looking for a retirement income stream to help pay for all the fine wine and holiday cruises!

Today’s retirees are fitter and younger than previous generations. Their lifespan is longer and they can expect many years of retirement.

However retirement is a huge upheaval and requires careful planning. Especially in the current global economic downturn and the uncertainty of what the future will bring.

Many baby boomers will need to work longer as they watch their retirement funds shrink. Those with money in the bank are seeing the interest on their savings plummet so it’s a double whammy for them. And falling interest rates are not helping those who have paid off their homes and no longer have a mortgage.

The first step towards a successful and fulfilled retirement is education. A growing number of baby boomers are realising this and are returning to high school or university to further their education, to fulfil a long-held desire or to create an income stream.

That’s awesome! The more you learn, the more you grow. And the more satisfied you’ll be with your life!

With today’s technology, learning is easier than ever. It can all be done online from home at a time to suit yourself! Here at Own Your Life Club we now have over 560 educational, inspirational and motivational audios, videos and eBooks to ensure your learning experience is easy, convenient and fun! Discover how easy it is!

Go on, give it a go! You’ll feel happier, healthier and more fulfilled. And that’s true of learning at any age, not just Baby Boomers!

How To Be Happy …

I’ll Be Happy When

We convince ourselves that life will get better after we get married, have a baby, then another. Then we’re frustrated that the kids aren’t old enough and we’ll be more content when they are. After that, we’re frustrated that we have teenagers to deal with. We will certainly be happy when they’re out of that stage!

We tell ourselves that our life will be complete when our spouse gets his or her act together, when we get a nicer car, when we’re able to go on a nice vacation or when we retire. The truth is there’s no better time to be happy than right now. If not now, when? Your life will always be filled with challenges.

It’s best to admit this to yourself and decide to be happy anyway. Happiness is the way. So, treasure every moment that you have and treasure it more because you shared it with someone special, special enough to spend your time with… and remember that time waits for no-one.

So, Stop Waiting

Until your car or home is paid off.
Until you get a new car or home.
Until your kids leave the house.
Until you go back to school.
Until you finish school.
Until you lose 5 kgs.
Until you gain 5 kgs.

Until you get married.
Until you get divorced.
Until you have kids.
Until you retire.
Until summer.
Until spring.
Until winter.
Until autumn.
Until you die.

There is no better time than right now to be happy.
Happiness is a journey, not a destination.
So work like you don’t need money,
love like you’ve never been hurt,
and dance like no-one’s watching.

Australia Day On The Beach…

Happy Australia Day 2009

Here’s a short video that we filmed just a few minutes’ walk from where we live and I’ve added highlights of how the day unfolded in Sydney and elsewhere around Adelaide.

We decided this year to join our Local Community for an Australia Day Breakfast on the glorious foreshore of Hallett Cove, South Australia.

It was a morning spent chatting to friends and watching young families enjoying their time together.

I was fortunate to have been given the opportunity to become an Australian Citizen and to be able to enjoy the kind of lifestyle that this great country has to offer. I am very proud to be an Australian.

I’m also grateful to be happily married to a ‘Dinky Di Aussie’, Julie, who taught me the Lingo, how to cook a shrimp on the Barbie and Aussie Rules!

We hope you had a wonderful Australia Day wherever you celebrated.

We met Prime Minister Kevin Rudd last night!

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd

He brought his whole Federal Cabinet to our local community for a public forum. About 800 locals, including Richard and me, attended the forum held at Hallett Cove School. The school where my two sons spent 13 years of their lives getting an education. And a good one at that.

Love him or loathe him, it was quite a show. Across the stage sat the PM, Deputy Julia Gillard and the other 18 or so Cabinet Ministers, including the very familiar faces of Simon Crean, Martin Ferguson and Peter Garrett. As well as the younger generation, Penny Wong and Nicola Rixon.

They took questions from the audience and the main focus, as expected here in SA, was on the ailing River Murray, housing affordability, pensioner issues, tax relief and climate change.

I guess it was the PM doing a bit of PR - but it felt good having them visit our little seaside suburb, prepared to listen to the concerns of ordinary Aussies. Good one Kevin!

The forum was the 6th in a series to be held across Australia as part of the Prime Minister’s commitment to ensure close consultation with the Australian people on the things that concern them, whether they are national or local matters.

These meetings give people in the community an opportunity to meet with Cabinet members in person and ask questions directly about issues which are important to them.

Thank you for choosing us!

Su Doku - A Puzzle to Ponder …

Su Doku - A Puzzle To Ponder!

Su Doku Puzzle

Over the years I’ve been a big fan of crossword puzzles, although I must admit to steering clear of the cryptic variety!

So, when a new type of puzzle called Su Doku appeared in my morning newspaper last year, I decided to give it a go. And I’m a big fan now. These days I skip through the Very Easy and Easy levels with ease! The Medium level takes me through a cup of coffee. However the Hard level sometimes frustrates me to the point of giving up so there’s a sense of achievement when I complete these.

By now you’ll be thinking I should get a life! (Perhaps you’re right, but that’s another story!) But I feel justified in my morning ritual after reading about recent research by the University of NSW showing that our brains shrink if they’re not stimulated.

Brain scans show that if we don’t engage in complex mental activity, such as puzzles, a new language, tai chi or even travel, our brains will have twice the shrinkage in old age.

The old adage ‘use it or lose it’ is literally true of our brains! So, let’s all do a puzzle or take a course in something we’ve always wanted to learn more about - and do it today - in the knowledge that it can delay or prevent the onset of dementia.

Now, back to my Su Doku puzzle! (I’m even trying to get Richard onto Su Doku - a lost cause?)

Breakfast on the Beach…
Friday, July 11th, 2008

Do you live near a beach? Have you ever thought about having breakfast on the beach?

Well Julie and I consider ourselves very fortunate to be living within walking distance of the beach and on this particular morning decided to have breakfast on OUR beach.

You know we often take our surroundings for granted, and I guess even we are sometimes guilty of that, as we tend to get a little caught up in the day to day chores of life. However once in a while it’s well worth stepping back from your daily routine, and do what we did. Have a look at this little video on the day…

When was the last time you had breakfast on the beach? When was the last time you did something different? Enjoy Life, enjoy the time you have in this wonderful world.

Return to work not profitable for Mums?
Tuesday, May 20th, 2008

A recent newspaper article caught my eye. It was entitled “Return to work not profitable for mums” by ‘The Advertiser’ Smart Money Editor Anthony Keane. The article suggests that returning to work after having children is not profitable for some mothers and can be a bad financial decision.

You know, I remember agonising over just that decision when my sons were younger. Return to work or stay at home with the kids? It’s really not an easy decision and depends on individual circumstances. Some mothers I know returned to work for the extra money, some to have social contact with other adults, others have careers that had been put on hold.

This morning’s article was focussed more on whether it’s a sound financial decision to return to work. After taking into account the money you would earn and weighing that up against the cost of work clothing (you can’t wear those tracky dacks to work!), transport, child care and associated expenses, some families are actually worse off financially!

If the financial aspect of returning to work is the important one for you (and who couldn’t do with more money each week!) then it is a good idea to sit down with a coffee and work out the cost to you of returning to work before you make your decision. You will need to take into consideration :

- Income Tax
- Family Tax Benefit A (in Australia)
- Child Care Costs after Rebates
- New Clothing, Shoes etc
- Transport or Parking

But there’s an alternative that is proving to be a win-win for some mothers. A lot of young mums are deciding to stay at home with their children and earn an income at the same time! Home based businesses for stay at home mums are becoming a very popular trend in Australia and overseas. So it’s worth thinking about a hobby, interest or lifelong dream that could earn an income and enable you to have the best of both worlds!
