A recent newspaper article caught my eye. It was entitled “Return to work not profitable for mums” by ‘The Advertiser’ Smart Money Editor Anthony Keane. The article suggests that returning to work after having children is not profitable for some mothers and can be a bad financial decision.

You know, I remember agonising over just that decision when my sons were younger. Return to work or stay at home with the kids? It’s really not an easy decision and depends on individual circumstances. Some mothers I know returned to work for the extra money, some to have social contact with other adults, others have careers that had been put on hold.

This morning’s article was focussed more on whether it’s a sound financial decision to return to work. After taking into account the money you would earn and weighing that up against the cost of work clothing (you can’t wear those tracky dacks to work!), transport, child care and associated expenses, some families are actually worse off financially!

If the financial aspect of returning to work is the important one for you (and who couldn’t do with more money each week!) then it is a good idea to sit down with a coffee and work out the cost to you of returning to work before you make your decision. You will need to take into consideration :

- Income Tax
- Family Tax Benefit A (in Australia)
- Child Care Costs after Rebates
- New Clothing, Shoes etc
- Transport or Parking

But there’s an alternative that is proving to be a win-win for some mothers. A lot of young mums are deciding to stay at home with their children and earn an income at the same time! Home based businesses for stay at home mums are becoming a very popular trend in Australia and overseas. So it’s worth thinking about a hobby, interest or lifelong dream that could earn an income and enable you to have the best of both worlds!
